A Utah Fall

I hope you like the new web design; I thought it was fitting for this time of year. I love fall; it’s one of my favorite times of year! It would probably be my favorite season, but it never lasts long enough and I know what’s coming as soon as fall is over—winter. And winter is NOT my favorite season, so that kind of puts a damper on my feelings for fall. (smile)

One of the reasons I love fall is the changing of the colors, and Utah is known for its fabulous fall colors. Almost every year we head up the canyon (only a 10-minute drive from our house) to enjoy all the colorful leaves, and this year was no different. Sterling and I actually went up the canyon on Sunday, and it was so breathtaking, we knew we had to invite the kids to go with us. So yesterday we took everyone in the family who is close enough to come, and we had a family Dutch Oven dinner, surrounded by Mother Nature’s own creative decorating.

It was a wonderful evening, and the colors were incredible. It was a little colder than we thought it would be—it probably dropped 15 or 20 degrees in the short drive from the house to the secluded little campground we selected. While Sterling cooked up his normal delicious Dutch Oven treat, the boys hiked the trails, I snuggled with Phoebe, Grandpa tried to keep warm, and we made a fun family memory.

A few highlights (although every minute was great!)—three-year-old Ashton dragged the kids’ chairs over to the picnic table bench, saying that could be “their table” (I thought that was adorable); Sterling, Jon, Jason, and Shalae tried to break up a large log into firewood by parking the truck on it and jumping up and down on the bumper, while Ashton looked on, as if wondering how many Gardners it takes to cut firewood with a truck (I thought that was hilarious); and the chance to take several family photos that will help us remember Fall 2008.

Shelli: Thanks for the beautiful pictures. My husband and I just returned to Reno from a hunting trip southeast of Provo. How right you are about the wonderful fall colors in Utah. The Aspens were just spectacular. Thanks.

So my question is, did the piece of wood ever break? Thinking creatively has to count for something that's for sure, and your grandson has a streak of that creative thinking in him as well. I LOVE that "picnic table" for the kids!

I love these pictures. Thank you for sharing them with us! I was astounded at just how beautiful Utah was this summer when I was up visiting my mom...I had no idea that there were so many lakes and so many different mountains surrounding the SLC/Provo areas. Truly it is "the place"...the place beautiful.

Beautiful pictures!! They make me miss Utah, we loved to go and cook dutch oven in the fall, Cooking it in the backyard doesn't have the same taste for some reason, or the same beatiful colors.

Just a quick question? Did the wood ever break? I don't think that I have ever seen someone trying to cut firewood this way, but I guess you use what you have!

Your website is amazing and I can't wait for the leaves to change here in Michigan. I love fall also, but I dislike raking the leaves everyday.

Have a great day and thank you for creating Stampin Up you are awesome!

I share the same sentiments about Autumn as you do Shelli except I don't mind snow as long as I don't have to drive in it when it is stormy. My husband - Lance and I both enjoy fall and all it's splendor and we got married 16 years ago today - yes Oct. 03/92.
I really like the look of your blog as it is so fitting for the season.
Our family went for a walk at a Springwater Conservation Park last weekend and it was so much fun walking , talking, taking photos, making memoriews and being goofy. The leaves are just starting to change colour so this will guarantee another walk beforethe leaves fall completely off the trees.
Then I will look forward to the first snowfall...

Hi Shelli,

I just wanted to give you some constructive criticism (which I hate to do). When I first opened your blog I thought wow I love that Autumn Vine pattern, but then I couldn't read the writing that goes over it (your opening greeting) and it kinda looks like you have a moustache...the colours are wonderful and the layout is great otherwise. I love to see into the life of a mogul and to see that they are a regular person with a glamorous life. Thanks for letting us all into your life. Sometimes I don't know how you find time for everything. Please don't post this, I just wanted to give my honest opinion.

So fun, I love how your family gets together and celebrates life :) I have a great recipe for peach 'dutch oven dump cake' (works with cherry too) if you'd like it - girl scout tested and approved!
