Oh, Happy Day!

I haven’t shared an update on my dad for almost a week, but I’m thrilled to do it today! We got a call from the hospital this morning, and I got my birthday wish—Dad is no longer intubated. Sterling and I went and visited him tonight. Truly I had to keep from laughing at some of the things he was saying, but it was so good to see him without the hand restraints and that nasty tube in his mouth. He was a breath of fresh air for me!

Just to make you smile, I’ll share some of the things we talked about:

Dad wanted to know where the Ritchie Brothers sales brochure was so he could decide what to buy at the auction.

He wanted to stop the nurse and find out what the plan was for dinner. He was tired of buying all the dinners and wanted a free one!

At one point in the day, he was distraught because of the fire in the hospital.

He mentioned he didn’t get much sleep last night because he was sleeping in the street.

Basically, some of what he talked about made complete sense, but most of his conversations were hysterical and totally crazy! I’m pretty sure the doctor’s orders to lessen his medication is a good thing (smile).

The grafting on Dad’s hands looks excellent, and the staples will be removed during the next dressing change. We found out earlier this week that all of Dad’s fingertips (just below the nail) on his right hand will need to be removed (the word amputated seems too harsh) and at least two of the fingertips on his left hand will also need to be removed. They aren’t sure about the other fingers yet. The doctor is going to operate sometime next week in order to let the grafting really take hold and give those fingers every chance to show new growth.

When Dad learned about his fingertips, he just said that he was 66 years old and didn’t need all those fingers anyway. Maybe that was the drugs talking, but since Dad is the most positive person I know, I think he’ll probably handle things pretty well.

Thanks for your continued prayers and well wishes. I appreciate it more than you may know!

Congratulations to your dad!!
Medication induced conversations are always fun hehe
I had my wisdom teeth removed under general anaesthetic and woke up asking for "my mummy" I was 21!
Hope everything goes well with your dads operation on his hands, at least if they go just below the nails he will still be able to use them to some extent, in the old days they would have just taken the whole lot off

Shelli, I am so glad for you and your family, that Dad, grandpa is better. No matter how old a person is, there is always hope of the future to come. My grandpa is 93, and for the most part is in good health. He lives at his house, and one of his daughters lives with him. He has 16 children. I will pray for a speedy recovery. Andrea Bolton.

That's great news, Shelli. I had been wondering how he was doing! Once your dad's feeling a little better, he'll probably get a kick out of hearing what he said. My mom and dad still laugh about what my dad said and did when he was first out of heart bypass surgery!

Happy Birthday ( yesterday) It sounds like you had a great birthday after all. I am sorry to hear about your dad's fingertips but from my own sitution I have learned you can do what you need to do with what you've got as long as you have a positive attitude. I am sure your father will do just fine. He sounds like an upbeat positive person just like you. Anywho.. Happy Birthday!

Fantastic! Bless his heart, I'm sure the meds are strong - I had a conversation with my dad the day after my gallbladder surgery last year and didn't remember a thing we talked about! Lol. I'm sure his surgery on his fingers are a minor inconvenience compared to the wonderful recovery from his injuries and return home. Tell him we might not know him in person, but he's still in our heart!

Shelli, Sounds like Dad is doing so much better. I believe God doesn't give us more than we can handle, and this seems obviously true in your Dad's case. I keep you and your family in my thoughts. - Danielle from RI

Oh, Shelli, I am so glad that you shared an update on your dad and that he finally has that tube out. I know how you just feel so much better when you can actually communicate with your loved one and you don't have all those tubes around. And the conversations are so funny. I remember Seanie thanking me for finally buying him a battleship and he was so worried because we had nowhere to park it.

So, give my best to your dad and of course, tell Justine that I am thinking of her daily. We will continue to hold your family in our prayers.

Oh Shelli! I'm SO glad to hear your dad is doing well! I remember what the drug induced talk was like with my grandfather (he had VERY negative, sometimes violent reactions to Morphine). One time he was trying to eat a floating sweet potato! Another he was fighting a war so my brother and cousins wouldn't have to! Sometimes they are so funny, others are scary and sad.
You and your family are in my prayers and thoughts.

Oh, bless his heart! I'm so sorry about his fingertips, but hopefully he will be able to deal with the situation. I'm so happy to hear that the tube is removed, and that he is doing better. What a wonderful blessing!
The best to you and your family during this stressful time. . .take care! :D

Thank you, Shelli, for the update on your dad. Aren't prayers wonderful?! More are being lifted for his continued recovery.

And a Happy Birthday to you. It's a good day ... our first grandbaby (a girl) was born on the 11th, so we're on our way to meet her for the first time.

Hugs,
Jeannette
