Home Again

After what seemed like an all-night flight and a day with our grandson Kona, I’m a little groggy, but I couldn’t go to bed without sharing a little bit about our trip to O’ahu (is that how you spell it?), Hawaii. One thing’s for sure, we weren’t ready to come home! It was so warm and relaxing, Sterling and I could have easily stayed for a few more days.

First, we were delighted when we checked in and found our hotel room was a corner room with two different but equally breathtaking views. We enjoyed both, depending on whether we wanted sun or shade or if it was windy or rainy.

So, what did we do all day, you ask? Aside from sleeping in until we woke on our own, eating plenty of fresh pineapple and papaya every morning for breakfast, walking along the beach, watching a few movies, and indulging in spa treatments, we pretty much read. That’s right.

It all started when the girls told me I couldn’t go with them to see the new movie Twilight (coming out this weekend) unless I’d read the book. So, dutifully, I began reading. When we were making our usual trip to the North Shore to attend the temple, I read silently while Sterling drove silently. Occasionally, I giggled, and after he could handle no more silence (I’m always jabbering about something...), he insisted that I read the book to him. That did it! We had both been bitten, you might say, and the rest of the trip was reading—here and there and everywhere!

And we didn’t stop at Twilight either. We read the draft online that describes Edward’s perspective, and then we made sure our Monday morning walk took us to Borders for New Moon! The books were fun and easy to read (sometimes annoyingly so), and now you know why I don’t read novels very often. Once I start, I can’t stop! Sage is bringing the next two books down on Saturday. Maybe Sterling and I can discipline ourselves to read a chapter a night—maybe!

We also stopped in at a quaint little restaurant named Cholos for lunch one day. Notice the cool car to the right of Sterling. I didn’t want to look too obvious by taking a photo of the car itself, but it was a beauty—surfboard and all!

And this photo reminds us of the fabulous flora and the countless waterfalls on the property (we could even hear waterfalls when our balcony doors were open) that muffled the sounds of Waikiki and made us feel like we were on our own little tropical island.

I’m already looking forward to next fall when we have our next trip to Hawaii planned. . .

Seriously - do you have the fountain of youth hidden up there in Utah??? I love Oahu and I hope you went to the great shave ice place on the north shore with the sweet beans... Matsumoto's? I can't remember. *sigh*

Thanks for sharing. I guess I will have to give in to all the peer pressure and read the Twilight books.. :)

Sounds like a great trip! I started reading Twilight on our church retreat this past weekend and ended up spending time reading when I was supposed to be "fellowshipping" and "bonding." oops...!

Shelli - A old friend sent me this book just as a nice surprise gift... with a note saying, don't ask, just read it! She said her 13 year-old daughter was reading this book and she had to know WHY in the world her daughter was reading a book about vampires! Of all things! It took me a couple weeks to pick it up and start reading, because to be honest I thought she'd lost her mind... vampires? Seriously! The night I started reading I was up all night... I emerged later that afternoon ... yes, I read the whole thing in an day and a half! I couldn't put it down! I told my friend I almost called her at 2 a.m.! She just laughed and said I told you so! Now, I have my mother and mother-in-law started... both of them gave me the same "look" when I told them what it was about! ha! You don't understand just how awesome the love story is until you start... What a fun read! I'm on "Eclipse" and hoping to have a chance over the holidays to get it read... Maybe I'll bring the last one to Hawaii in March! YEAH! Looking forward to that trip! Thanks again for sharing your personal blog with us! Have a great week - Heather Deshayes

Reading your posts are like being right there with you. After I finished reading, I 'awoke' in my home, not on vacation <grin>. But thank you for the fun trip! I enjoyed traveling without the long flights!

See you in Florida. Looking forward to the warm weather oh yes and Leadership & Regionals! :)

Shelli,

Looks like you had a nice, relaxing, vacation! Soooooo jealous! Love the pic of you laying in your pj's reading! That is me!

I just started the book and can't wait to go to bed to read it! I really want to read it now but am preparing for Stamp Club tonight and can't!!!!

I too won't see the movie til I read it! And would love your opinion on whether a 13yr old boy would like it? And is it appropriate?

Hugs,
Joan

Shelli,
What a wonderful trip you had. I loved the pictures of you reading. When my husband and I go on camping trips, I read read read. After all the talk on this blog, I had to get a copy of Twilight yesterday and have had no time to get started on it. I have to get ready for a Mom's Day Out at a school in Beardstown, that a stamper at a recent workshop organized for me. And before that I have to clean up my stamping room, but maybe if I am fast with the cleanup I can get a little bit of reading in. But then that could be dangerous, because if a book is good, then I must read it till it is over.
Thanks for this wonderful company! I just love what I do!

Oh Shelli, my daughter and I have read all the Twilight books together so I know EXACTLY what you mean. In fact, Serena insisted we attend the Midnight Masquerade party in Toronto when Breaking Dawn was released (far part our bedtimes!). I put her "happy dance" up on YouTube to share with her grandparents, which had them giggling hysterically.

Anyhow, we'll be seeing the movie together on Sunday and I look forward to hearing how you and your girls enjoyed it as well!

All the best,
Caroline

Welcome home! Even though my 17 y.o. daughter has all the "Twilight" books (and absolutely LOVES them!), I'm not going to get sucked in and sneak them out of her room after reading how everyone loves them! ;c)

Great pictures....especially the one of you reading in bed!!! Too cute! I must confess after your earlier post about getting Twilight to read on your vacation I bought a copy. I am in the middle of finishing another really fun book called The Same Sweet Girls (in true southern belle style) but I hope to be able to start Twilight this weekend. You and Sterling look like you are having a great time. Aren't getaways just too fabulous!! Have fun!

I too just got back from Hawaii -- wasn't it wonderful? I also wanted to mention that my 70 year old mother is now reading Twilight and just started New Moon this week. Those books just reel you in! Glad you're both enjoying them!

Wow - I might be one of few people who feels these books potray an un-Godly view of love and romance to young girls. Although the books might touch on the subject of abstinence, the overall theme of star-crossed lovers, and the actions of the characters is not what I would want my teen daughter reading. It's frightening that girls would find it romantic to have someone spying on them while they sleep, or that it's okay to refer to one's boyfriend as a "god." Perhaps if the targeted audience wasn't the age group of kids that I teach I wouldn't be so against them. I don't know. I want my students to have pride in themselves, and to feel self-worth and value - and to never feel that they are inferior to any boy. At this age we should be teaching our daughters that a pure heart and body before God, and that a having a living relationship with Him is better than any romance.
