A Day with Dad

Yesterday I spent the day with my dad! I haven’t seen him since the holidays, so it was a wonderful opportunity to spend precious time together. What brought us together wasn’t necessarily happy—he had a cousin whose wife passed away, so we went to the funeral. I enjoy funerals because they’re unique opportunities to celebrate people’s lives and to gather as family and friends to express love and support.

But beyond that, I enjoy spending time with Dad, especially when we’re alone--and driving to and back from the funeral allowed plenty of alone time. He always makes me feel special, and he loves to share what’s going on in his life. He is such a character! He loves to talk, and even if you never say a word, he keeps the conversation flowing. (But those who know me, know that the conversation was definitely two-sided!)  I love that he’s always chasing a dream and that he shares those dreams with me.

As I dropped him off at the airport for his flight back home, I was exhausted—and so grateful. I don’t know where it gets it all; he’s an amazing man. I sure love you, Dad.

Thank you Shelli for sharing such a wonderful little visit you had with your Dad recently.. I lost my Dad suddenly just a few months ago and I truly miss those times we had together.. My Dad has a bunch of health issues stemming from his Polio which he got when he was 23, but it never stopped him as he did more in his lifetime than most people dispite his handicap!

I still have visits with him, they are just more one sided these days, although I pretty much know exactly what he would say to me most of the thime! Family is so precious, life here on earth is so short and my Dad always used to say "Topday is a Gift, that's why it is called the present"

Thanks again... ~Shelly~

what a wonderful post - I too have lost my dad and would cherish another moment to speak with him. Your dad must be so proud of you and your achievements ... you are obviously a chip off the old block as my dad would say :o)

Beautiful post Shelli - it's wonderful to read how much you treasure your Dad and that you have such a great relationship with him. My Dad has been very ill for the past 3 months and has been in and out of the hospital for much of it. I am spending as much time as I can with him as I don't want to squander any opportunity. Like your Dad, he is a wonderful man, full of wit and wisdom and I just love being with him.
Thanks so much for sharing!

Shelli, Lynn looks great. I am sure that spending time with your dad is even more precious after everything he has gone through with his racing accident and all. Thanks for sharing and continue to enjoy!

What a great father & daughter picture. I'm so happy you were able to spend this time with your dad. My dad passed away 10 years ago in June and the last Father's Day card I made him was published in the Stampin' Up! Portfollio II Book II on page 24 (2000). My dad was in the hospital for Father's Day that year and was unable to communicate. I set his card on the table at the foot of his bed. I hoped it reminded him of his days fly fishing in Huntington Canyon and of the love I had for him. The stamp set I used on the card, "Fishin'", was the first Stampin' Up! stamp set I purchased and it will always remain in my collection.

I loved reading this! I feel the same day with my dad, and every conversation we have-on phone or in person-I always come away from it feeling so blessed to have him as my dad. There is something special about the bond between a daughter and her daddy!

So I'm a blog lurker :) Your dad is in my parents ward (Doug & Carol Broadbent) and I love him. He's great. My husband got so excited when he saw him featured in one of his car magazines that he gets. You're family is awesome! Thanks for all the inspiration on your blog! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and ideas with us. Dad's are great and I'm truly grateful for my dad.

Shelli,

I am so glad you got to spend this time with your dad. My mom passed away Jan. 15th and I am so thankful for the 3 weeks she was able to live with me. I was blessed beyond measure. I so agree that funerals should be a celebration of life and that is what we had for my mom. We were able to share the sweetness of her life and the relationships she had with each of her 9 children,19 grandchildren, great and greatgrandchildren and many friends.

Reading that you spent time with your father made me stop and think I need to spend more time with mine; and not to get so absorbed into my immediate family all the time. Time with "coach" I call my dad would be great!

Thanks for sharing. It is great to hear that you had this special time with your dad. This is a good picture and will bring wonderful memories each time you look at it.

I agree about funerals being a celebration of life. I just lost my uncle last week and my family went through a lot of pictures and shared great memories from years past.

I too am fortunate to still have my father with us. He survived a massive coronary and 5 way by-pass 3 years ago. I am thankful for the doctors that our good Lord lead here to care for my father at that critical time.

My dad is also a character, always telling jokes (he is a terrible joke teller b/c he can never remember the order sequence and often says the punch line before he should-makes me love him even more) and singing little ditties from his childhood.

Thank you for reminding me just how much he truly means to me.

Take good care and God bless you and your family.

What a great post Shelli! I agree on funerals, they bring family together to not only be able to spend time together, but to realize how short our lives are, and that we should make more of an effort to enjoy the company of loved ones. Yes funerals are sad, but we are brought together to celebrate that life.I'm happy you got a nice day with your dad, thanks for sharing!

I'm so glad your dad was able to come to town for a family funeral. And I agree that sometimes the funerals are the one special event that family comes together. One of my co-workers commented yesterday that she spoke with you at the graveside. Kerry? Do you remember her? She thinks you are all that and more. I think so too. Well, anyway I'm the co-worker she spoke about. And we do indeed have some very talented demonstrators within SU! Thanks for sharing on your blog. (((HUGS)))

What a beautiful picture of both of you! Scrapbook it! Sorry to hear of your loss. In every family funerals and weddings seems like the only time we can get members of the family together at one time.

My prayers are with you and your family...always!

Bear Hugs,
Terry~~

Hi Shelli, Thank you for posting such a great story about the time you spent with your dad. I am very close to my dad, too, and your time together sounded so much like the time I spend with my dad--especially the part about him always making you feel special! That's what a daddy/daughter relationship is all about. Thanks, again.

Your dad looks terrific. How are his hands doing? I am jealous that you have the opportunity to spend with him. I lost mine 20 years ago and still miss him terribly. Treasure the moments, which I know that you do. God Bless you all.

Love you both,
