Convention Is Coming!

Last week we had our Australian convention, and it got me all excited for our US/CAN convention, coming up in July! Hands-down, convention is one of my absolute favorite Stampin’ Up! events, and I am already looking forward to the opportunity to spend time with our wonderful demonstrators and feel the incredible excitement and motivation that always accompanies every convention.

Someone recently asked me, Why should a demonstrator attend convention?

While the question certainly made sense (after all, much of the information and training offered at convention can be found online), a long list of things came flooding into my mind—and I wanted to share them with you!

Certainly the opportunity to see new products being used for the first time is valuable. Watching people demonstrate how things work—and in some instances having the opportunity to do a little hands-on experimenting yourself—opens your mind to all sorts of exciting possibilities where new products are concerned.

The project ideas that are shown at convention are staggering. Besides the dozens of things you see on stage, there are literally thousands of projects shown on the display boards and in the marketing areas. I’m convinced you could find every project idea you need for the next year at convention!

The recognition and rewards that take place at convention are truly inspiring. The pride and excitement I see in our demonstrator’s eyes and on their faces when they march across the stage (and you didn’t think I was paying attention when I was back stage, did you?) makes me smile—and sometimes even tear up. And the Awards Night is a convention highlight for me—the chance to see demonstrators rewarded for significant achievements in their Stampin’ Up! career.

There’s also classes taught by your peers, demonstrators who are going through what you’re going through and who have great ideas to share. There are classes taught by our professional training staff, who offer valuable tips and hints on how to strengthen your business in every aspect.

In addition, there’s our annual game show, live entertainment, prize patrols, the Memento Mall, the convention bag and Make & Takes (all that free stuff!)—none of which are even available online. The list goes on and on. . .

But by far, the most valuable aspect of convention for me is the intangible experience that takes place as we gather together, face to face, and share Stampin’ Up! with each other. The groups of demonstrators swapping in hotel lobbies, in the convention lobby, in corners of the hallways and at tables in the Gathering Place. . . I LOVE walking through that electric environment and seeing the creativity and camaraderie at work!

The  impromptu conversations that take place between new friends and old friends, as we discuss what we love most about Stampin’ Up!, and also what’s hard and challenging—then share stories and solutions and support.

And the opportunity you get to spend valuable time (sometimes even into the wee hours of the morning) with your fellow demonstrators. Women who get what you’re about, who share your passion for stamping and creating, who understand more than anyone else the role Stampin’ Up! has played in your life.

If you haven’t signed up to spend a few days with us in Salt Lake City in July, do it today—you won’t regret it. Convention is one of the most fun, exciting, and inspiring events we offer—I can’t wait to share another convention experience with you!

OMG how could you miss convention. It is the best thing ever and you are right on everything Shelli. I am counting the days down to next years already here in Melbourne, which is going to be an extra day YES, it is only 338 days away (LOL).

I have been to every convention but one since 1997! And the only reason I missed the one (Denver) was because I had just had surgery! It is definitely an experience not to be missed! I remember sitting at the awards dinner in 1999 with my husband and him saying to me "How can we get you to Minnesota next year, this is great!" Do whatever you can to come! You won't regret it!

Unfortunately I have never had the chance to go to convention. I have been mostly a hobby demo for the last 6 years and and looking to change that now. My goal is to do well enough to cover most of the cost of going to convention. I have heard only great things about the experience and can't wait to get the opportunity! Looking forward to seeing you all next year!

The Sydney convention was my first convention as I had just completed my first SU year and I was blown away! One of the highlights for me was the genorousity of the SU home office staff. Esp you and your husband Sterling who helped me on to the stage to collect my top 10 in New Zealand prize as I am unable to walk very well. I was so thrilled to get up on stage and without Sterling helping me up and down the ramp I wouldn't of got there! So thank you again from the bottom of my heart! The whole convention was worth the trip and we are planing on getting to the next one in Melbourne already!!

As a hobby demonstrator, the cost of convention is beyond my means. I would love the opportunity to attend and wonder if, in the future, there will be an opportunity to present some sort of convention that could be geared more toward the hobby demonstrator?

I have been to convention a few times and it is always an incredible experience. I wouldn't be able to come up with a list shorter than 100 reasons why someone should go. It isn't always possible, I have to miss this year to do unexpected bills, but it is well worth every minute and every penny. Plus, even moms need a break now and then!

For me Shelli, when I attend convention, it inspires me. Just when I think there is nothing I can learn more, something new comes along. When you came to my workshop of a lifetime, I asked you to talk to demonstrators a little about convention and how it is important to go. I started as a hobby demo and attending convention was the first step to changing from hobby to a business opportunity. There are so many venues with SU. And it is at convention that you get to learn and grow.
There are not many jobs where you walk in and feel all that positive energy, not many jobs where you have people who truly love what they do. The old and new friendships are what I truly cherish! A quick tip: I use my points from my credit card, points that I accumulated during the year with stampin up orders etc. It covers my flight ticket and my hotel room. Also, I do a retiring party and a new catalogue party so this is for my spending money, memento mall etc. If you never been, truly assess why and put it in your goals for the future! July is just not getting here fast enough!(smile)

Hear, hear!!! It is the last thing you mentioned -- the intangible added value of all those conversations with other demos while you're in line somewhere, the ideas you see while watching someone else's organized swap, the tip you overhear that sparks a great class or workshop idea -- all of those are the things I would miss if I could not go to convention. Not to mention that I've always viewed it as my vacation from the day-to-day responsibilities of life so I can focus on just my love of stamping and seeing all my Stampin' Up friends from across North America. Can't wait!!

Convention is a must! I have gone every year since becoming a demonstrator. Each year I learn more and more. I think this is true because I am more prepared to learn. I have made many SU friends and I can't wait to see them again each year. In every industry, the quality of its output is dependent on the training of its people. Stampin Up offers us an amazing opportunity to tool ourselves. Thank you so much!!

Convention is amazing! Why wouldn't you want to go? Visit the SU demo site under Events and read all about convention...watch the highlights video...see the smiling faces it's all so true! Stampin Ups convention will rock your world and knock your socks off. :) I've gone every year since I became a demo and this year I'm unable to attend but I'm very excited for those that can attend, especially the newbies. You won't want to miss it. My biggest takeaway was the comraderie of all the women. It's not everyday you get to be around people who truly get why you love rubber stamping, Stampin Up and being a demonstrator. You'll feel encouraged, validated, joyful and rejuvenated. Great way to start the new Stampin Up year with a bang! Invest in yourself by going to convention. You ARE worth it! :)

"our annual game show, live entertainment, prize patrols, the Memento Mall, the convention bag and Make & Takes (all that free stuff!)—none of which are even available online."

This part is so much fun but the part I look forward to the most is spending time with friends, swapping cards, and listening to all the great information from the stage.

The free prizes and getting to walk across the stage to celebrate our accomplishments makes all that work worthwhile.

May each of us who are blessed to attend convention 2010 come home with excitement that will be contagious! My customers and friends can't wait to see all the new ideas.

Thank you for all you do

Shelli said perfectly all of my favorite reasons for attending Convention--after missing a few events (Convention and Leadership) I can't wait to go again this year.

My first convention was last year and I plan to attend EVERY convention. I met so many wonderful, gracious women, and came away with renewed energy, great ideas, and new friends. Stampin'Up! is a quality organization which supports and loves its demonstrators. This is reflected in everything that happens at convention. You may be able to get video and information that was at convention on line, but it does not come close to the value you get from attending. I love Stampin'Up! and I love their conventions! Wouldn't miss them for anything!

I enjoy your blogs but am starting to be uneasy about the content for your demonstrators who are voicing financial impacts on the Stampin Connection chats. No one denys you deserve the wonderful experiences you have earned but perhaps your blogs shouldn't be so much about your world travels as it seems a bit grand for those who are struggling to find the monies to survive. It's a fine line I realize as you have worked hard to be where you are but it seems lately you are blogging an awful lot about vacations and trips when others are hurting just getting through their day. A gentle request to write less about those trips. Sorry, I wrestled with writing this and I don't mean to be negative it just is hard to read this continually.

Please change the focus of your blog less on the all trips and travels you are taking as it is a bit grand for your demonstrators who are hit hard financially in this economic times. No one denys that you have worked hard to build a successful company but it seems all you are writing about is expensive vacations and travels.

Hi Shelli.

You are so right about how awesome convention is - even for the husbands/partners of the demo's!! Ok, I couldn't go to the classes, but I had a great time at the awards dinner cheering for my wife, Marelle in Sydney, as she scooped the pool (1st recruiting, 2nd in sales and 4th overall-YAY!!) - but I digress.
I was hoping you could pass on my MAD Balloon blog (no this is not a spam message...) to Bonnie Thurber please. I remember hearing about Bonnie arriving in Melbourne last year for regionals and her luggage not arriving with her, and how she rose to the challenge - and triumphed.
I had the same Bonnie-esque experience last weekend while teaching in QLD, and used Bonnie as my inspiration to get through. You can see the short video on my blog.
I sent a little cheerio to you and Sterling as well, so feel free to have a sneeky peek yourself. Looking forward to Hamilton Island in October.
love your work
